HISTORY

In 1894 the Pomona Terra Cotta Company was founded by a Quaker man, W. C. Boren. Like many factories in the 1800s the owners constructed homes for their workers to live in. The community would be known as Terra Cotta.

As the residents aged, it became clear that they would need somewhere to bury their loved ones. Mr. Boren owned a large amount of land in Greensboro, so he gave the community a plot of land for a cemetery. Decades later, the Pomona Terra Cotta Comany closed and Mr. Boren sold the land surrounding the cemetery. As Greensboro grew, the cemetery became overshadowed by Greensboro's booming commercial complexes.

After the closing of the company, many residents moved away, and some passed away. The cemetery was difficult to maintain for the remaining residents. In 2012 a news story was released claiming that an abandoned, overgrown cemetery was found. The Terra Cotta residents responded, informing the news that he cemetery was owned by the two community churches. The Terra Cotta community used this as an opportunity to educate Greensboro of their existence. The community has worked together to keep the cemetery well maintained since.
